Creativity, Innovation, and Long-life Learning


First of all I want to thank Paman Apik for teaching me about Creativity and Innovation. This lesson gives me insights, strategy, best practices, process, facts and much more about creativity and innovation. Thank you for your creative and innovative idea that inspired me to develop our creativity and innovative thinking. I think it’s one of the most useful lesson in my life.

I think that I’m not a creative person at all. I’m not a person who can create an artistic design for our existing daily products or breakthrough technology that would be useful for the entire human lifes. But, this lesson gives me something different point of view about it.

“Creativity isn’t about painting a picture or composing a piece of music or writing a novel. It’s about looking at things from a different perspective, trying out something new even if you’re not sure it’s going to work, thinking up lots of fresh ideas and having a go, and it could even be that dreaded clich thinking outside the box. “

Creativity and Innovation are the buzz words right now with some related reasons. With the economic changing, companies are looking for their people with their best and strongest asset, to help them survive and thrive. And it can be done by doing things differently, which is the core meaning of creativity and innovation.

A company who wants to achieve or remain cutting edge couldn’t do it by resting on its laurels or past successes. They need to be continually building a better mousetrap or at least making the present one more attractive. This action has been applied successfully by most of the global company in facing the global competition era.

Below are some points that I learned from this lesson:

The methods in this lesson gives me various individuals or teams sharpen our creative capabilities to keep pace with our aspirations. Similar to many organisations right now, it results big changes and I have to rise our creative challenge to be success in the future.

This lesson tailored me the need   to stretch imaginations and inspire myself to make a greater contribution for the future. Whether we are in IT, Accounting or even Marketing we can learn to be more creative and innovative. We just have to step outside from our comfort zone, try out something new, and do a fresh innovative idea that would be useful for our life.

Dia pergi ke sebuah gua dan bertemu Isaac Newton yang terlihat sebagai sesosok raga yang sedang berdoa kepada Jesus Christ. Namun di tempat itu juga, dia menemukan  tempat penyembahan Buddha, dan menerima kesempatan yang sangat langka, yaitu bertemu langsung dengan seorang Confucius. Di luar gua, St Paul sedang melakukan kegiatan senam pagi bersama Tsai Lun yang memakai baju baru. Dan Johan Guttenburg sedang balapan dengan Christopher Columbus untuk mendapatkan hadiah cemilan dari sesepuh Albert Einstein. Louis Pateur sebel karena tidak diajak untuk ikut serta dalam balapan ini, dan sebelnya jadi double ketika Galileo Galilei menceritakan tentang keseruan balapan ini dan betapa nikmatnya hadiah yang akan diterima. Untuk mengembalikan mood nya, dia pergi ke warung nasi timbel milik Aristotle. Dia bertemu Euclid yang sedang bercerita tentang fabel kepada temannya yang bernama Moses, seorang pengusaha mebel. Ketika keluar dari warung, dia melihat Charles Darwin lagi nambel ban sepeda milik Shi Huang Ti di tempat yang bejubel. Dan dia membayar dengan selembar uang bergambar Julius Caesar sebagai label di permukaan depannya. Tiba-tiba dia merasa lapar dan melihat Nicolas Copernicus yang sedang makan sambel. Pemandangan ini membuatnya memutuskan untuk pergi ke rumah Antoine Laurent Lavoisier dan memasak makanan enak di dapul”

By trying to arrange the words into an interesting story, we remebered them with a fun way. This quick and easy way to remember develop our creativity and spontaneousity in the way of thinking.

Hal yang menjadi kunci kesuksesan adalah pentingnya mencoba untuk menjadi entrepreneur ketika menjadi mahasiswa. Alasannya adalah kesalahan atau kegagalan lebih dapat ditolerir ketika menjadi mahasiswa. Setelah lulus, kita akan menerima lebih banyak tanggung jawab terkait harapan dari banyak pihak (orang tua, keluarga, masyarakat) adalah untuk menghasilkan uang. Sementara itu, entrepreneurship seperti kita ketahui bukan merupakan hal yang instan dan memerlukan proses untuk mencapai kesuksesan.

Kepedulian yang tinggi terhadap diri sendiri, menjadi diri sendiri, mengedepankan kemauan diri sendiri disertai dengan passion yang dimiliki penting untuk ditanamkan dalam diri kita masing-masing.
Begitu pula dalam hal bisinis, jika kita membuat bisnis yang kita sukai, maka itulah sukses. Semuanya menyenangkan. Bisnis tidak menjadi beban, tetapi menjadi hal yang menyenangkan. Dengan memiliki modal itu semua, maka orang-orang akan menjadi maju dan berubah menjadi lebih positif.

I’m Doraemon –original soundtrack-


Do you know or just ever heard about this song?

Some people will answer yes, while most of them probably not. But, I certain everyone knows about its character, Doraemon.  Doraemon was the first animated Japanese movie that I’ve ever watched. I was about 4 years old when I first saw this blue-cat robot creature on TV.

Doraemon itself was first appeared in December 1969 and was first published simultaneously in six different magazines. Created by Fujiko F. Fujio, doraemon is a “robot” cat who travels back in time from 22nd century to the 21st century to help and guide a normal schoolboy named Nobita.

Throughout his life, Nobita has lots of misfortune. And he fails in most subjects at school and unfortunately, he does not have a good career and always have financial trouble. And this trouble is inherited to his children and great children and his whole family line, so Nobita’s great-great-grandson sends Doraemon to Nobita hoping that this robot will bring ‘luck’ to Nobita and alter his history.

Each Doraemon story covers moral lessons and as a child, I learn a lot about integrity, family, perseverance, team-work, dedication and diligence. All of the characteristics in Doraemon story have been created to be act generously by the creator to be memorable in the viewer’s brain.

Manga or Japanese comics are the most popular stories and the history of this uniquely Asian storytelling medium that’s now hugely popular with readers and publishers worldwide. Since we were a child, we have already known about some of manga and get into them without we realize it. And we started to know more about Japanese, their food, culture, and the most important is about their creativity and innovation in developing technology.

People in over the world have been focusing their attention on contemporary Japanese culture. Since the 1990s there has been a burst of creative energy in the fields of manga, anime, gaming, art, architecture, design, literature, food and fashion. This phenomenon of recent years, which is in sharply contrast to the former exotic images of Japan as the land of Mt. Fuji, Geisha and Kabuki, is stimulating the formation of a new image of Japanese culture.


Nowadays, it blossomed into a Japanese contemporary culture whose influence reverberates around the globe and which fascinates so many people, particularly from amongst the younger generation.

In the world of popular culture, there was a constant flow of enormously varied and striking images and works from a group of Japanese creative artists. This cultural activity developed a dynamic of its own which enveloped not only the creators but also the consumers, and now, even at this very moment, is being given more overseas exposure.

Behind the high-tech and moden Japanese, let us look more closely at the historical background that gave rise to the perception among young people of contemporary Japanese culture as “cool”. The truth is that subcultures have often arisen during the significant periods in Japanese history. As they matured, they went on to form a complex multi-layered culture. For instance, the tea ceremony became fashionable in the Azuchi- Momoyama period (1568-1600), while ukiyo-e prints were popular in the Edo period (1600-1867). These tangible and intangible cultural treasures were stored up as assets which, through being passed on to subsequent generations, have blossomed again in contemporary culture.

So what are the elements that constitute contemporary Japanese culture? Japan certainly absorbed culture from mainland Asia in ancient and mediaeval times. In modern times Japan absorbed culture from the West, and in the post World War II era particularly from the USA. But we can see that contemporary culture not only as absorbing elements from other cultures but also as interpreting them from a unique perspective, then re-shaping them into a new style and fusing them with something completely different. It is a culture in which the old and the new co-exist, one that appeals to the general population and that anyone can enjoy.

People was brought up surrounded by beautiful natural scenery and landscapes and from olden times have honed a sharp appreciation of beauty. Japan approach the creation of objects with a love for their beauty and, with a long tradition of diligence and dedication, go about the task of creation with an uncompromising stance: while striving for simplicity and the eradication of the superfluous, they do not neglect attention to the tiniest detail. At the root of this approach lies a spirit of harmony which is evident in our philosophy of co-existence with nature.

It could be said to be a magic in the real life, about the contemporary Japanese culture, which draws on a creative tradition with unbroken links to the past.  Japanese want to tell the other parts of the world to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of Japanese contemporary culture.


“Made in Japan” denotes precision, and leading-edge technology. Japan decided early on to invest in fostering such technology to combat global warming and is making headway in this challenging field.




Traditional Japanese architecture is characterized by wooden single-storey structures. Lacking a tradition of cave dwellings and stone walls, it was natural for the nation to develop this style. The traditional structure has not changed during recorded history, remaining intact after Buddhist architecture entered Japan from China and the Korean Peninsula in the mid-6th century. Even shrine architecture – widely regarded as having been stimulated by Buddhist architecture – retains the typical wooden single-storey structure



Japan’s product design has always closely mirrored current issues. An example is the nation’s increasing environmental awareness and ageing population, factors that have to be taken into consideration in any account of contemporary Japanese society. This broad social backdrop to the field of design has given rise to the paradigms of “universal design”, which seeks to make products as widely usable as possible, and “ecological design” incorporating environmental concerns. Japanese design is also characterized by whether products are kawaii (cute), emphasising their softness and gentleness.



Tokyo fashion is about young people. It’s about the young people strolling in the streets who decide what appeals to them, and this trend then spreads among their like-minded peers. This youth-driven phenomenon is similar to how Mods and Punks created their own fashion in the London of the ’60s and ’70s. The difference is that young Tokyo trend-setters are not people angry at society, like the Punks, or people who use a style of clothing as a means of protest. In Tokyo, the girls want what’s kawaii (cute), and both the boys and the girls want clothes that will make them the focus of others’ attention.



Japanese cuisine is based on the enjoyment of a richly varied table offering a nutritional balance through a range of seasonal offerings. In doing so it reflects the Japanese people’s discriminating approach to taste and ingredients and their readiness to explore the unfamiliar. While continuing to value their national cuisine, Japanese households also create local versions of foreign dishes: a homemaker will often prepare curry one day followed by pasta the next. The Japanese have an insatiable interest in food. Cookery experts and chefs will introduce recipes in the media, only to see suburban kitchens using them on the same day

Creativity and Innovation


As a college students, we have at least three main role in our society, agent of change, social control, and iron stock. As an agent of change,  we had a special role and reponsibilities to play in the social and civil-rights. We have given the opportunity to get skill and knowledges to act as an agent of change to develop our country. As a social cotrol, we have to concern about our society, and having a part to regulate individual and group behavior, leading to conformity and compliance to the rules of a given society, state, or social group. And our last important role is to be an iron stock, which means that we have a big responsibility to be a leader in the future. The future of Indonesia is in our hand, so we have to take the reponsibility as a chance, opportunity, and encourage our creativity and innovative thinking to develop our beloved country. Because as a colllege students, we are a part of young people who have experience, knowledge, and skill which are our country’s potential assets in developing social and economic condition in the future.

Opportunities, Chances, and Prospects

Golden age is commonly known as an important age when his or her brain could grow and develop faster than any other age in their life. According to this, I think that we, as college students are also in a golden age where we have so many opportunity, chances, and prospects for our future. The simple problem, which also in almost every students’s brain is how to  maximize it

1. Organizational and leadersip experience

In college life, we have so many opportunity to get organizational and leadership experience. By being a part of an organization, we can learn about many things, such as communication, social relationship, knowing each other, networking, tolerance about the differences, and many other important social skills, which also related with our Emotional Quotient. It can be an effective and efficient part in incerase our own personal growth and personal development. Especially, if we can take a part as a leader, we can get more advantages from this experience, because leadership is one of the most important soft skill to be success in the future.

2. Do exchange

Nowadays, we are in a globalization era when everybody in this world could be connected easily by internet, cellphones, and other new development technology. So we need to prepare ourself for the future. One of the way that we can do is go exchange! As a college students, we can get many opportunity to go to another country for studying, seminars, conferences, partnership, internship, etc. By doing this kind of program, we can get more experience and more open minded to face the world in the future. And the best part is we can get it for free, if we are qualified and try harder to get it

3. Networking

Being a college students , we can get many access to expand our networking.  We can get many friends in our universities, our friends’ universities, networking with lecturers, famous and successful person, and many other people that  we meet in our life. We always have to expand our networking and maintain it, because it would be useful in the future

4. Be an entrepreneur

Entrepreneurship is becoming a social issue for the most recent years in the world, including Indonesia. As a student, we have many chances and opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship. We can learn a lot from the experts by attending seminars, workshops, or even read his or her successful stories. Indonesian Government are also take an important part in developing entrepreneurship in universities in indonesia. And it works, now the number of students who start-up their business or just start to learn about entrepreneurship are increasing significantly.



As a college students, the three main roles can give us opportunities, chances, and prospects which would be good  for us if we can maximize it, or it would also be a big disaster for our life.

1. Failure

“Failure defeats losers, failure inspires winners” – Robert T. Kiyosaki, author, entrepreneur, investor.

The biggest enemy that we have to defeat to be success is being a loser. And only a loser who easily give up because of failure. So, we have to face it, and make it as an inspirational experience to be the winner and success in the future.

2. Experience

“Experience taught me a few things. One is to listen to your gut, no matter how good something sounds on paper. The second is that you’re generally better off sticking with what you know. And the third is that sometimes your best investments are the ones you don’t make” – Donald Trump, real estate and entertainment mogul

Experiences are the best teacher in our life. But many students often don’t take the opportunity that he or she could get, for example organizational and leadership experiences. We will know nothing if we didn’t experience it, so take all the opportunities that we deserve to get and maximize ourselves in it.

3. Awareness

“I will tell you how to become rich. Close the doors. Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful” – Warren Buffet, investor and billionaire

Most of students don’t aware with the situation and condition around them. For being a successful person, we have to always alert with many other things around us, and do the right things in the right time.

4. Lack of creativity and innovation

“Nobody talks about entrepreneurship as survival, but that’s exactly what it is and what nurtures creative thinking. Running that first shop taught me business is not financial science; it’s about trading: buying and selling.”

One of the most important things that many of students don’ t implement in their life is creativity and innovation. Because it is the key success of many successful person in this 21th century is to be creative and innovative. It is simply differentiate our idea from the others, but make it more important, effective,  and efficient.


In solving our problem, I think the most important thing is to be creative and innovative, implement it in every single day in our life. We need creative problem solving competencies indicative of innovative leaders. We have to know knowledges of the major creativity theories, to enhance one’s latent creative strengths, to foster ability to apply creativity in the our place, and to present methods for assessing creative strengths.

Creativity requires a balance among synthetic, analytic, and practical abilities. A person who is only synthetic may come up with innovative ideas, but cannot recognize or sell them. The person who is only analytic may be an excellent critic of other people’s ideas, but is not likely to generate creative ideas. The person who is only practical may be an excellent salesperson, but is as likely to sell ideas or products of little or no value as to sell genuinely creative.

Encourage and develop creativity by teaching students to find a balance among synthetic, analytic, and practical thinking. A creative attitude is at least as important as creative-thinking skills (Schank 1988)

Related with the four level of innovation, five level of creativity, and The World is Flat book, we have to do the fourth stages which is create a new innovation (business innovation) and the fourth stages in five level of creativity (orientation creativity). It is really important for us to add creative and innovative idea for our life. Nowadays, we can connect each other wherever we are with others in wherever they are. All of us are connected with the new technology development, such as internet, cellphone, and other important and useful things.

According to implement the fourth level in innovation, fourth stage in creativity level,  and the principle in The World is Flat for a business students for example, we learn how to maximize profit with minimizing the cost. And we can collaborate with other ITB students in IT and Mechanical Engineering to a development in transportation technology which using the internet connectivity for minimizing the cost that we have spent for transportation, and get benefit for minimizing the time that we have to spent before this products existed. So we can increase the effectiveness and efficiency of this new product.

Our own creativity, is the most important asset that all of the students have. We  have to experience of it by ourselves. In a moment, we have to think of a time when they had a great idea. It doesn’t have to be a media event, or changing an industry, it doesn’t even have to be a business idea, but something that worked for us. And so right from the start of us are acknowledging to ourselves that we are creative, that we do have enormous creative resources within us.
